Lisa's New Zealand Journal - aged 11

Good bye Australia

We had to have an early start the next morning so we skidadled into the caravan and went to the place were we dropped the caravan off. We got a taxi to the airport then all we needed to do was check in our suitcases and do all the other passport stuff. So we got that out the way and waited for our plane, we waited and waited.
At last it came so we boarded on and then we were back in the air again. It wasn’t that long; well it was only three hours. There was a movie on called Duma so I watched that and it was really good it was about this boy who had a pet cheetah, anyway you wouldn’t like to know. It was hard to the see the screen but by the time it had finished we were almost there. I looked through the window New Zealand looked tiny.

Auckland, Sky Towers, Chinese food, borrowed boyfriends and rain

When we got to the ground I realized it wasn’t that small, it was huge! We got a shuttle to take us to our Youth Hostel in Auckland. The scenery wasn’t what I was expecting but it was a city I had thought Auckland would be covered in hills and grass. Our youth hostel wasn’t exactly luxury but it was better than nothing.

The next day we explored the wonderful Auckland. We went up the Sky Tower, which wasn’t anything like Blackpool tower, it was long and skinny. See for yourself. We walked across the glass floor, which wasn’t very scary at all. It was just like an ordinary floor except it was transparent. We didn’t stay up there long it was a bit crowded so we got back down and had some brunch.

Then we had a little walk around town and explored the shops. I noticed that there were a lot of Chinese food and people. We did a bit of homework then went to see a movie. It was a strange city if weren’t for all the gum on the pavement it could have been Singapore. We had some Chinese for dinner then went back to the hostel.

Today we woke up and packed our bags for the shuttle that would take us to the car hire place. When we got there we took all the luggage out the shuttle then we did all the boring document things. At last we all boarded into the car, it wasn’t anything like a motor home, it was very small. We drove off and every time we turned a corner we expected to hear crash of plates but there wasn’t which was very nice.

Ziggy the cat, Stickle Gilling and Keri Keri, North Island

When we got to our Destination, a town called Keri Keri and found our first Youth hostel. It was great and really friendly, we took everything out the car and went to our new bedroom which was perfect. We put the bags away and then went on a little walk.
This was the hilly place I was expecting. It was a nice walk but Sarah had a sore foot again. We headed back and jumped into the car and drove to rainbow falls. It was very big so I wasn’t really keen on jumping in. I liked the walk but we had to head back before dark so we did. We got there, played some badmington, did some sewing then had some supper and finally settled down for a movie on the laptop, which was very good.

Dune Boarding, Cape Reinga and the Tepaki Sand Dunes

The next day we did all the morning duties then we packed up to go sand boarding and to go up to Cape Reinga, the most northern point of New Zealand that you can get to by road. The bus arrived, well; it wasn’t really a bus at all. It was like an enormous 4by4 and it had high wheels and it weird painting on it. We got on and drove off to a forest place were we had another little walk. There were loads of really big trees called kauri, which were hundreds of years old. Unfortunately it got a bit crowded so we left quite quickly. I got to sit in the front so I wouldn’t be sick, so did Sarah. I could see the sea and to my amazement we got to drive on the actual beach.
We drove along I was looking for wild horses but I didn’t see any. We did see a Mercedes Benz that had sunk the sand that’s somewhere where you shouldn’t park your car! The beach was called 90mile beach but it was really 64miles. It was a long drive, but it was nice to drive next to the sea, finally we got there. We jumped out and stretched our legs, we were handed these big boards, which were really heavy. The sand dunes were called Tepaki and it was huge and I’m not exaggerating, it was a long way to the top. At last I got to the there and lay down on the board. I went zooming down I felt fast as a bullet weeeeeeeeeee! It was like I was Queen of speed and then it stopped, it was like finishing a chocolate cake!
I did it twice, the fun bit was going down, and the tiring bit was going up. We packed the boards up and drove on we got onto to the road and stopped at a beach called Teputaputa, we had a picnic lunch and fed the seagulls. The sea was really clear.
We didn’t have all day to stay there so we got back on the bus. The next stop was called Cape Reinga, there was a lighthouse and next to it was signpost saying how far to get to all these countries. There was no chance of me getting to London, it was 18029km away.

We drove back along the beach and a lot of people fell asleep, including mum! On the way back we stopped at a wood shop. There was a huge Kauri tree that had been hollowed out and carved into a staircase.

Then we carried on driving until we got to the famous fish and chip shop Manganui. I found the fish very tasty but the chips were the best. Finally we got back home. It had been a long day but I really enjoyed the experience.

The next couple of days we just stayed at the Keri Keri and caught up on homework and laundry. A cat kept us company, his name was ziggy, he had cross-eyes and he was so sweet.

Dolphins, Granny J and the Bay of Islands

The next stop was the Bay of Islands, where we went horse riding and dolphin watching. First we went horse riding over the hills and in the creek, which was wonderful.

Then after that we met up with Granny Joan and she took us to restaurants and we went to go dolphin watching. It was lovely, we saw dolphins jump for joy and they came so close. It was an amazing experience. We also sailed through a hole in the rock and we could only just fit, the mast was almost touching the rock (scary).

Zorbs and Bad Smells!

We travelled along for eight hours! and we stopped at Hamilton. Then drove on to Rotorua and the smell was utterly awful, I couldn’t breath the smell was so bad. We were on top of a volcanic region, not a nice idea. The city was small and very smelly! The best thing was when we went zorbing it was so fun! What you had to do was get in this bubble and then roll up and down like a little hamster in its treadmill. We ended up being puffed out!

Taupo Lord of the Rings and climbing Volcanoes

The next stop was called Taupo and the hostel was horrible, it had an awful smell. While we were staying there we went snorkelling and we climbed up Mount Ruapehu. We drove to the bottom of Mount Ruapehu, and every time we drove higher it got colder. By the time we got there we had to buy fleeces. We headed towards the chairlift and borrowed some of their some warm jackets that you can use for free and jumped on the chairlifts and we went really high.
It was really fun. Eventually we got to the café and then started climbing. The first bit was fine but after a while it was tiring. Mum kept on saying almost there and an hour later she was still saying almost there. It was the Mountain from The lord of the rings and guess what?! I found a ring, although it wasn’t the one on lord of the rings. The scenery was very misty so we couldn’t see much.
Finally we got to the top and looked around there wasn’t a lot to be seen. Walking down was almost as hard as walking up but in different way. Our knees were really sore. I felt proud of myself for walking so long and hard so when we got to the lift station we got a hot chocolate and some chips!

After Mount Ruapehu

The next day we moved on to Paraparaumu and it was a very grotty hostel and there was long nosed lying lady she said it was fine to swim and Sarah got stung by a blue bottle (type of jelly fish) she also said the fish and chip shop would be nice but we ended up giving it to the birds. The next morning we left early to go to Wellington at the ferry port because we were going to the south island.

Flooded Bathrooms and long Distance phone calls

After a few days we ended up in Wellington and we were planning on going on a ferry to South Island. The ferry took three hours so we had some lunch. Then I watched a movie and did some scoobies. We finally arrived in South Island the town we were in was called Picton sound. We got of, well drove off and looked for a youth hostel. We eventually found one and settled down, it was a very nice so we stayed there for a few nights. It was near the sea so mum looked at boats. I finally could talk to Sophie, my best friend so we talked on the phone for ages. I enjoyed staying there but we had to leave but not before we had managed to flood the upstairs bathroom.

Roses and Champagne, Split Apple Rock and water Taxis

Mum wanted to go to Motueka for her birthday so we stayed in a YHA called bakers lodge and there were bakers because every evening they came round with fresh muffins. There was an advertisement saying that you could ride horses from Lord of the Rings.
The next day we phoned them and it was arranged. The horses were lovely although I couldn’t sop my horse called prince doing a trot. We rode on the beach in the wind it was wonderful! The saddle hurt my legs badly. I tried to do a canter but I couldn’t. When I got off my legs were in agony but prince was a great horse I even photoshoped them on the computer.

For mums birthday we went to Abel Tasman. We got a boat that dropped us off. We went past the split apple rock the name says everything about it. We got off and walked over to a really cool swing. We had a really long walk in the adventures of where is the swing bridge? There was a swing bridge and it was ages away. At last we got there, there was a lake under it that was so clear. We walked over to the beach the water was so clear. We were in the water in seconds. It was very cold we had a picnic lunch and swam with little fishes. It was lovely after the long walk, we took so many pictures.
We spent a long time swimming and enjoying the nice view. When it was time to go we weren’t ready to go yet but all of a sudden our water taxi came. We rushed around I got completely dressed and then I soon realised I had to swim across the estuary to get to the boat. By the time I got on it I was soaked to the skin! We finished off the day by going to a nice Indian restaurant.

Kaikoura, Naughty little Boys, Puppies and Wild Seals

We headed down to KaiKoura and did some homework in the car. We soon stopped the homework and looked for seals. There was a seal colony and there were loads of seals everywhere there were even little baby seals!

We finally arrived at our lodge and went into our room. There was a three-year-old boy next door called Cameron and he was so annoying!
The next day we went to the fair we got our breakfast and went down to the fair. There were all sorts of things basically to do with animals. There was horse jumping and I turned green with envy as I watched them. Mum called me over to watch the sheep shearing so we watched that. Lots of them tried to escape but they didn’t. We looked at some nice knitting and then headed over to the tent and there were the sweetest cutest cuddliest little puppies they were all soppy and so cute! Sarah wanted a spray can so we went off to get her one; 3 minutes later it was finished! We looked at the horses jumping they looked wonderful. We walked along and came across these little cars that we could drive in. Sarah and I were soon in them Sarah knocked over the cones because she was driving. We decided to swap so I was behind the wheel; I kept on trying to avoid the other cars but it wasn’t very easy. Soon the little drive ended so we got out and went to see the puppies again. This time we got to hold them they were so cute!

Thermal Springs and Zip Wires

We headed up to Christchurch and stayed there one night. We went to an amazing park with zip wires and everything.
The next night we stayed at a place called Hanmer Springs. There were some spas and pools so we went there. The pools were like 35 to 40 degrees and that is hot! Our YHA was nice so we stayed there two nights. It was a bit boring after the other places we had visited so we were pleased to head off on the next leg of the trip.

Mackenzie Country, Mount Cook and the first day of Autumn

Lake Tekapo was were we stayed next in a place that was like a ski chalet. It was very windy and cold there. We had a little drive and managed to get stuck in the gravelly sand and Mum was frightened that she have to call someone to dig us out but in the end we finally got out ourselves and decided to go to the church instead which was very nice. Instead of a wall behind the alter there was a huge window with an amazing view of the lake. When we got out the wind was howling so we hopped into the car and went back to the ski chalet to do some homework.

Queenstown, Pine Lodge

More Lord of the Rings, Tibetan Yaks, Jet boats, stone skipping, luges …

The next day we drove all the way up to Queenstown and stayed at a nice little lodge for four nights. While we were staying there we went to a deer park where part of lord of the rings was filmed. There were all sorts of animals there were including of deer, wild pigs, bison, yaks and miniature ponies, there were even goats. We were aloud to feed them so we had lots of fun doing that.

We also enjoyed going on a shotover jetboat up a little river and on the lake, which was so fun. Sarah and I had life jackets, raincoats and hats and scarfs and gloves. We looked really funny! The boat goes over 85km an hour in water that is just 10 cm deep in some places. It screamed up and down the river over the rapids and did all these turns and stuff, me and mum felt quite ill by the end.

One day we decided to go to the bead shop were you could make your own necklaces. There were so many beads we didn’t know which to choose. We finally finished them and they were very pretty.
I loved going up in the cable car, we were very high so it was a bit scary. When we got to the top we decided to go on the luge. The luge is like an iron but much bigger and with handles, and you used it like a go cart going downhill. We went on it and had a lovely time.

Gloworm Caves, Snow and Bark Owls

We said a sad goodbye to Queenstown and drove up to Teanu. The drive was about two hours. When we finally got there we took everything out the car and settled in our new room. We got out and explored a bit around the shops.

Then we came back and just chilled until it was time for dinner we drove around looking for places to eat. At last we found somewhere so we went in and orded. The food came really fast; my cheeseburger was very big and tasty!

The next day we went to see the glowworms in the caves. We got a boat to take us there. The boat dropped us off at this rainforest and we wondered around until it was time to go to see the caves.
The lady took us underground we had to walk for a while and then we got in a boat but it was soon worth it. We sat in the absolute complete dark and looked up at the glow worms they were so close you could almost touch them. They looked all so sparkly it was amazing! Sadly it didn’t last that long so we went back to wait for the boat.. I enjoyed the experience.

The most Southern point of New Zealand

Invercargall was were stayed next so we headed up there and stopped to see the bluff, which is the most southern part of New Zealand. We stayed at Invercargall for just one night and explored the museum where they had all these pictures of crazily dressed Japanese people. We didn’t find Invercargill very exciting.

Albatrosses, Seals and hawks, Steepest Streets and 3m dives

After Invercargall we drove on to Dunedin. It was the first proper big city we had seen since Wellington on the north island so we had a lot of fun looking in the shops. I bought a nice hat with possum fur and wool. It was perfect and warm. The hostel was lovely and it used to be a hospital and in the bathroom next to the loo was a printed page of Did you knows. Most of them we didn’t. Like the fact that Dunedin has the steepest street in the world.

The next day we drove on this really twisty turny road; it was so turny I felt so sick! We were driving to the Otago peninsular to see the albatross. While we were driving a hawk flew right next to my window! At last we were there, I got out with my green face. We walked down to the edge of the cliff until we could see the seals. There weren’t that many so we went inside for breakfast we orded muffins and scones. They were delicious, it had caramelised fruit in the middle! We finished it sadly then we went to look for an albatross. We saw one but it was very young and small and not what I was expecting it to look like.

That afternoon we went to the local swimming pool to have a splash. We got in and it was freezing so we got out and went to the warm pool. That was a bit better we were in a wave pool so we waited for the waves to come. We waited and waited and at last it came it wasn’t nearly as big as the one in wet and wild!
We soon had had enough so we got out we walked passed the diving board. We decided we should try so Sarah and I climbed up and soon Sarah was down with a splash! Now it was my turn so I got to the top and looked around was pretty high there was a long pause and then I jumped off I was in the air going down then SPLASH! I landed at last! I couldn’t get over how high I jumped I mean 3 meters is quite high! We then went to the museum and looked at food chains and dinosaur bones. There were all sorts of weird and wonderful things.
We drove back to the hostel and had dinner then went to bed.

Methven, Untidy rooms and Pizza

The next day we went to Methven another place to wonder. It took 4 and half hours to get there so we were very happy to get there. The hostel was lovely and we wished we could have stayed another night. We had to take all the suitcases out the car to pack for the cook islands, so the room was a tip! When we sort of tidied things our stomach started rumburling so we had pizza in front of the TV. The movie did take a while so when it was finished it was straight to bed!

Christchurch, Getting lost, Cantering and angry Japanese Hostellers

From Methven we went to Christchurch were we got lost loads! We asked were the youth hostel was a dozen times! We drove around until we thought we would have to sleep in the car. When all hope was lost out of the blue there was the youth hostel. We were relived when got there so we hopped the car quick as a bunny! The youth hostel was alright but we had to share a room with somebody the good news was the room was nice. We stayed there two nights so we went shopping and bought tons. the last day we were planning on swimming with dolphins so I got really excited mum phoned to see if it was still on but oh no it wasn’t! The weather was very windy and the swell was too high to go out to sea. I was really miserable so instead I went horse riding.

We got there and I turned my frown into a happy smile. The horse I rode was called Shay and he was an amazing horse, a purebred Arab. If you wanted to do something he would just do it. The canter was soon turned on and I was cantering away happily. I was doing a proper canter not a 2 second one. I came off the horse with a huge big cheesy grin. That night we had a lovely last dinner in New Zealand at a Café under the trees.
I woke up to a bad start because we shared a room a lady got really angry. She was awful, she said Sarah stole her bed so mum argued and then the lady stormed out the room and this was while it was still dark. We got all the suitcases together and hopped into the car to take it back to the car rental place and they took us to the airport so at least we could find it.
We checked in and there was a disaster because just after mum put the suitcases in the luggage place we realised the penknifes and scissors were in the hand luggage oops! Fortunately they were so nice about it and let us keep them. We were finally on the plane and off to Auckland then the Cook islands. The plane was ok for an hour but we were still happy to land in Auckland. We waited a bit and got on another plane again and we were off to the Cook Islands.

It seemed to take for ever to get there. I loved New Zealand. I was looking forward to nice warm Cook Islands.
